First time cat owner? You got this!

Just adopted your first cat or little kitty? Welcome to CPA (Cat Parents Anonymous) where we confess that these four-legged furballs have taken over our lives... and we love it.
But First. Are You Really Ready?
Before you fall in love with the slow blinks and toe beans, let’s talk real life.
A cat is a vibe and a responsibility. They need daily care, your money, your time, and your home. They live 12–20 years.
Ask yourself:
✔ Can I keep a litter box clean every single day?
✔ Can I afford proper food, toys, vet bills, emergencies?
✔ Do I travel a lot or keep moving houses?
✔ Am I willing to learn my cat’s moods and not take it personally?
If the answer is mostly yes, amazing. You’re ready for the chaos and joy of cat parenthood.
If not, it’s okay to wait. Pets are not impulse buys; they’re family.
At Petzone Kenya, we've helped thousands of new cat parents across Kenya get started right and now we’re giving you the ultimate guide to raising your royal fluff without the chaos.
In this list, we’re going to talk about what you actually need before and immediately after your kitten or cat comes home.
1. Cat Litter Setup
Nothing kills that "new cat parent" vibe faster than walking into a house that smells like cat pee.
Before your cat even steps paw in your home:
- Set up a designated litter area away from foot traffic and food.
- Scoop daily, deep-clean weekly, and if you’ve got multiple cats? Use the rule: 1 litter box per cat + 1 extra.
- Choose unscented clumping litter to start with. It’s gentle and easy to clean.

- Location matters: quiet, private, and accessible is key.

Technically, no. A clean, low, wide basin or cut carton can work short-term. But if you're big on function and aesthetics? We’ve got beautiful, self-sifting litter boxes, stylish scoops, and more.
Kitten tip:
- Use a low tray with no lids
- Stick to unscented litter
- Be patient — accidents are normal
2. Food: Because "Girl Dinner" doesn't cut it.
First things first: cats are obligate carnivores. That means they need meat to survive. It’s not a preference, it’s biology. If you feed your cat chapati scraps and milk, you’re setting them up for long-term health issues.
Your options:
- Complete & balanced cat food. No guesswork, just everything your cat needs (look for real meat and taurine on the packaging). If you’re starting with a kitten, look for food labeled for growth or kitten-specific formulas like KEOS+ Kitten Growth Boost. Follow the feeding guidelines on the back of the pack
What’s taurine?
It’s an essential amino acid your cat can’t make on their own. No taurine exposes cats to risks like blindness, heart disease, and neuro issues.

Wait, do cats need water? And what about milk?
Yes, cats (even tiny kittens) absolutely need access to fresh, clean water daily. But here's the kicker, many don’t naturally drink enough (thanks to their desert ancestors)
That’s why wet food or broths aren’t luxuries, they’re lifesavers.
Dry food only diets + poor hydration = kidney and urinary tract drama and no, milk isn’t a good substitute.
Most adult cats are lactose intolerant. If your kitten was separated from their mum early and isn’t fully weaned yet (typically before 6–8 weeks), skip the cow’s milk and use a kitten milk replacer instead. It’s specially formulated for their tiny tummies and gives them the nutrients they’d get from their mother’s milk.
Set up at least one shallow, wide water bowl in a quiet, easy to reach spot, away from litter and food bowls. If you have multiple floors, have one on each. Cats that feed only on dry food require more water than cats who have a mixed feeding regimen
Don’t forget:
- Use a shallow, wide bowl (some cats hate their whiskers touching the sides – whisker fatigue).
-
Always provide fresh water, every day.
3. Veterinary Care
Cats are notorious for hiding pain so proactive vet care is key.
Your checklist:
- Vaccinations: especially for kittens
- Spay/neuter: reduces spraying, aggression, roaming
- Deworming & flea control: indoor cats aren’t immune
- Annual checkups: yes, even if they “look fine”
Ask your vet about a vaccination/deworming schedule for your cat’s age and lifestyle.

4. Mental & Physical Stimulation
A bored cat is a destructive cat. If you want to keep your curtains, couches, and toes safe — stimulation is a must.
Kittens especially need short, frequent play bursts throughout the day to burn that endless zoomie energy. Start play routines early to bond and build trust.
Give them:
- Wand toys, catnip mice, puzzles
- Scratching posts (so they don’t use your furniture)
- Vertical climbing spaces (cat trees, wall shelves)
- 10-15 mins of daily play — yes, even “independent” cats need it
5. Safe Sleeping & Hiding Spots
Cats love cozy, hidden places especially when the visitors get too loud
Create spaces with:
- Comfy beds by windows
- Enclosed “hidey-holes” or cardboard boxes
Let them retreat. It’s not personal — it’s just how cats recharge.

6. Grooming & Hygiene
Sure, they self-groom but they still get matted, stinky, or crusty.
Start grooming early while your kitten is still young. Use soft brushes and gently introduce nail trims and teeth checks as part of playtime. It’ll save future you a lot of scratches.
Maintain their glow-up with:
- Regular brushing (especially for long-haired cats)
- Trim or file their nails frequently. Be careful not to cut them too low as they have nerve endings and blood vessels in their nails.
- Dental health options (toys, treats, or brushing)

7. Bonding & Emotional Wellbeing
Cats feel. They form bonds. They just show it differently from dogs.
Your job?
- Respect their boundaries
- Learn their body language (tail twitches, ear position, slow blinks are all clues!)
With patience and consistency, your cat will reward you with loyalty, cuddles, and maybe not biting you during nail trims.
